A church so broad belief is optional

While I am usually (only) critical of the ANC’s attempt to encompass every possible tendency and grouping in our society, there is some upside. In a country where the divisions are so stark and numerous and the mechanisms of conflict resolution and compromise so new and untried, there are some good things about a large political party that tries to straddle every contradiction.

Cosatu does the right thing

Godsell and Vavi stand firm against the BMF and the ANCY YL …. the Chairman of the World Gold Council and the boss of Cosatu … what’s that about? It’s about those who need economic growth versus those who want to loot the state for their own ends.

The Accidental President

Jacob Zuma was never ‘destined’ to be president. It is an accident of history.

Cosatu – the dog that caught the car

Some things were never meant to happen. Cosatu being this close to government because they backed the right horse in the leadership race is one of those things.

Book Review of Architects of Poverty

I give Moeletsi Mbeki’s excellent book the thumbs up and make some minor criticisms about theory.

Cosatu is the enemy of the unemployed

I get a bee in my bonnet about Cosatu’s endless claims to represent the poorest of the poor, when the truth is the very opposite. I argue the same thing here and here.

Race to the finish

Do not underestimate the power and meaning of “race” in South Africa. Sometimes it seems that Julius Malema is the only person prepared to call it like it is.

Julius Malema is the Coming Man

I argue that the rise of Julius Malema is irresistible. He is de facto one of the most important leaders and the politician with the most significant mass base. It is time we faced up to this.

The Spirit of Polokwane? – probably Johnny Walker Blue

I argue that the left victory is a myth and the real drift in the ANC is towards the property owning classes and the new elite.

Those aren’t Polokwane Chickens!

Pravin Gordhan’s first mini-budget was a welcome corrective to the drift.
